‘EMERGING KERALA AND SUBMERGING VALUES’ :(Translation:T. J. Jacob,St. Pauls MTC, Vashi)
Once Parasuraman threw away the axe, which he was holding in his hand, from the southern corner of India. It sped past for a quite long distance, above the sea, before falling deep down into the sea. The area, through which his axe traversed, suddenly emerged from the sea. This is the way how Kerala was emerged. This Kerala, which emerged from the sea, has now some sort of mismatches, as is believed today. Till a few days back, the front pages of our newspapers were carrying hot news of the horrible incidents of the heinous murders and political killings. The analysis and debate over the new idea “Emerging Kerala”, is a welcome change from this trend. It is creative and money- oriented in thought and deed. Keralites are smart enough to scuttle down any new ideas, through arguments and allegations. It is considered that the decisions emerged from “Emerging Kerala”, have higher energy and potentials. Let’s wait and see.In the real sense, what is to emerge from Kerala? When new financial structure, science & technology, IT sector, metros, super markets and malls are emerging one after the other, is anybody really thinking about the “Submerging Kerala”? When the “Emerging Kerala” is highlighted at one end of the spectrum, we see the dull view of the deeply drowning ‘submerging values’, at the other end. Kerala has to emerge from the grip of alcoholism, violence, corruption, cruelty towards women, pick pocketing, land mafia, political extremism in arguments, as well as rebellious mentality.Aren’t there many things, which do not contribute towards financial security and growth? Are peace, love and happiness, other than the mundane gains, now beyond the control of our sense organs? Kerala should have the emergence of a new society, where loving the co-creations, protecting the environment, supporting the weak and taking care of the deprived lot become a reality. If care and growth are the concerns, then rehabilitation of project affected people should happen prior to setting up of the Airport. Unemployed should get employment, before the setting up of Info Park and Techno Park. Words should be translated into deeds. We should not encourage the import of tourism from abroad, but should have a tourism policy of highlighting and maintaining the ancient Indian culture. There should emerge a Kerala, where poverty, sickness, unawareness and injustice are all being removed along with their roots, in a careful and determined manner. Love, justice and peace can be reaped ,only if they are sown. Let ‘Friendship Parks’ and ‘Love Parks’ emerge in Kannur, Cochin & Kozhikode, along with the Techno Park. Then we will be able to witness a new ‘Emerging Kerala’. Let that be our goal…
